World Record for Highest Vehicle Mileage
The car with the most miles ever recorded is a 1966 Volvo P1800S owned by Irv Gordon, a teacher from Long Island, New York. Guinness World Records certified it as the highest-mileage vehicle at 3,039,122 miles on May 1, 2014, and Gordon kept driving. The odometer read 3,260,257 miles when he passed in November 2018, according to Swedish automaker Volvo.

A Lifetime of Driving
Gordon bought the Volvo new on June 30, 1966, for $4,150 and drove it for 52 years. A 125-mile daily commute and weekend road trips put 1 million miles on it by 1987. Car shows across the country kept the miles coming after he retired, and the car passed 3 million miles in 2013. Gordon never skipped maintenance. He changed the oil every 3,000 miles, used only factory Volvo parts, and did most of the work himself. The original engine is still in the car after two rebuilds.

Volvo owns the car today. The coupe is on display at World of Volvo, the brand’s museum and event space in Gothenburg, Sweden. In 2021, classic car insurer Hagerty filmed the car for The Next Big Thing, its video series hosted by Porsche collector Magnus Walker. Walker became the first person outside Volvo to drive it.
