Experian data shows that 24.1% of new vehicles were leased in the first quarter of 2026, meaning roughly one in four new vehicles is leased rather than purchased. Leasing was 25.8% in Q1 2025 and 24.3% in Q1 2024. Most drivers still buy or finance rather than lease.

What Is the Average Lease Payment

The average new-vehicle lease payment is $619 as of Q1 2026, compared to a record $770 for a new-vehicle loan. Lower monthly payments are the main reason drivers lease as new vehicle prices continue to rise.
