The Explorer Tremor arrived for 2026 as the first Tremor version of Ford's best-selling SUV. It replaces the Timberline as the Explorer's off-road trim and goes further, adding a factory lift, underbody protection, and a limited-slip rear differential. The 2026 Explorer Tremor is a three-row family SUV built to handle gravel, trails, and towing while staying comfortable on the daily commute.

Off-Road Features

The Tremor rides on a one-inch lift with specially tuned springs and sway bars, giving it 8.7 inches of minimum running ground clearance versus 7.6 inches on a standard Explorer. Front and rear deflector plates protect the undercarriage.

A standard Torsen limited-slip rear axle sends torque to the wheel with more grip on loose or uneven ground, and Intelligent 4WD is standard and the only drivetrain offered. The Tremor rides on all-terrain tires and 18-inch High Gloss Ebony Black-painted aluminum wheels with Tremor Orange accents. The Explorer Tremor is finished with accent-color tow hooks, off-road auxiliary lights, and a model-specific grille.

The Explorer Tremor is built for trails, gravel, and loose surfaces. Without a low-range transfer case, it handles dirt roads, sand, and moderate trails but stops short of the slow rock crawling you would ask of a Bronco or a body-on-frame truck.

Engine and Performance

The Tremor is the only Explorer that offers a choice of both engines. The standard 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. of torque. The available 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 delivers 385 horsepower and 415 lb-ft., both rated on premium fuel. Both run through a 10-speed automatic, and the V6 adds a quad chrome exhaust. The V6 comes as a no-charge engine option within the Ultimate Package.

The four-cylinder does 0-60 in about six seconds and returns 19 mpg city and 23 highway. The V6 does 0-60 in about 5.1 seconds and returns 17 mpg city and 22 highway.

Towing Capacity and Trail Angles

Every Tremor includes the Class III Trailer Tow Package as standard, good for a 5,000-pound maximum with either engine. The V6 pulls heavier loads with less strain on grades. The reshaped front and rear fascias improve the angles that matter off-road. The Tremor posts a 24.1-degree approach angle and a 23.7-degree departure angle, both better than the Explorer Platinum's 20.7 and 21.5. That means less risk of scraping a bumper climbing onto or off of an obstacle.

2026 Ford Explorer Tremor Drive Modes

The Terrain Management System offers six drive modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul, Slippery, and Off-Road. Off-Road mode relaxes the traction control and holds gears longer to keep the SUV from bogging down when the surface turns rough or steep.

2026 Ford Explorer Tremor Interior and Seating

The Tremor seats up to six, using second-row captain's chairs rather than the seven-passenger bench offered on other trims. Maximum cargo volume is 85.3 cubic feet. Stitched Tremor logos appear on the front and second-row seats, with matching floor liners.

2026 Ford Explorer Tremor Packages and Options

Two packages build on the Tremor's base equipment. The Convenience Package adds ambient lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, upgraded sideview mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, driver's seat memory, and third-row PowerFold seats. The Ultimate Package pairs with the V6 and adds a premium B&O sound system, auto-fold mirrors, a panoramic fixed glass roof, and multicontour front seats.

Changes for 2027

The Tremor carries into 2027 with the same off-road hardware and two additions. The Panoramic Vista Roof with power shade returns after Ford swapped it for a fixed glass panel in 2026. The Sun and Sound Package becomes available on the Tremor for the first time, bundling a 14-speaker B&O sound system, multicontour front seats with Active Motion, and the Vista Roof.

2026 Ford Explorer Tremor Price

The Explorer Tremor starts at $50,160 including destination. The V6 comes only with the Ultimate Package, which pushes the price to around $62,000 before other options.

Is the Ford Explorer Tremor Worth It

The Explorer Tremor delivers genuine off-road capability in a package families can use every day. It handles gravel, light trails, and towing without punishing you on the highway. The suspension is tuned for trail use rather than extreme terrain, so it stops short of a Bronco or a body-on-frame truck.

However, the Explorer Tremor is not for everyone. It drops to six seats, since it only comes with second-row captain's chairs and cannot be optioned with the seven-passenger bench. The all-terrain tires add road noise and cut into fuel economy, and the soft off-road suspension leans and dips more when you accelerate or brake hard. The lack of a low range also caps how far it can go off-pavement. Buyers who never leave the pavement pay for hardware they will not use, and a standard Explorer or the more powerful ST covers that ground for less.

For buyers who want a capable three-row SUV that occasionally leaves the pavement, the Tremor fits that gap well. Those who want maximum seating, lower running costs, or the hardware for serious rock crawling are better served elsewhere.
