According to National Safety Council analysis of NHTSA crash data, fatal crashes peak on weekends and rise sharply after the workday ends. Holidays like New Year's Day and the Fourth of July rank as the single deadliest dates, driven by heavier traffic, fatigue, and drinking.

## Deadliest Time of Day to Drive

The 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. window is the deadliest three-hour block, accounting for about 17% of all traffic deaths. Roughly a third of fatalities happen between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., when the evening commute, fading daylight, and rising impairment overlap. Alcohol involvement climbs sharply after dark and peaks between midnight and 3 a.m., which is why weekend nights are the worst.

The Fourth of July is the deadliest holiday overall. From 2020 through 2024, more than 2,700 people died during the July 4th holiday period, and 38% of the drivers killed were legally drunk, the highest impaired share of any major holiday.

Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends follow close behind. Most of the worst individual days each year fall in summer, when travel, long weekends, and drinking overlap.
