The Federal Highway Administration tracks this through [Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT)](https://afdc.energy.gov/data/10315?ref=verydriver.com), which measures miles driven on public roads by cars, trucks, and commercial vehicles. The FHWA's long-range forecast projects that miles driven will grow by roughly 0.4% annually through 2050. To put 3.3 trillion miles in perspective: that's enough to circle the Earth more than 132 million times, or travel to the sun and back roughly 17,000 times. Men drive roughly 16,550 miles annually compared to 10,140 for women. Another 29% have driven around with no destination in mind, just to clear their heads. 42% have stayed in their cars after arriving somewhere to finish a song, podcast, or audiobook. Americans spend a lot of time on the road, and that's not changing anytime soon. Car ownership continues to climb, and new drivers are getting behind the wheel each day.
